Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) said on Monday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is wrong for saying he will not allow any government shutdowns during his time in GOP leadership.

“No, no. He’s absolutely flat-out wrong,” said Chaffetz on Monday. “If he wants to say that for his body, great. I’m not giving up on anything there. We told them if we get the House, we can play defense on the Obama administration. If we get the Senate, we can play offense. And they haven’t seen those bills get to the president’s desk.”

Chaffetz is among the fringe conservative base that has been angry with Establishment Republicans for not taking a hardline stance against the Affordable Care Act and Planned Parenthood. Attacking each of those programs would result in a government shutdown, something the GOP Establishment and Democrats want to avoid.

Chaffetz is running for the House Speaker nomination against House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to replace John Boehner. McCarthy represents the Establishment, Chaffetz represents the insane conservative fringe.
