Retired military and combat veterans explained why the National Rifle Association’s mantra that “the only thing the stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” doesn’t work and is poor logic. It boils down to a lack of proper training.

According to retired Army Sgt. Rafael Noboa y Rivera, who also served as RawStory’s associate publisher in 2013:

I think there’s this fantasy world of gunplay in the movies, but it doesn’t really happen that way. When I heard gunfire [in Iraq], I didn’t immediately pick up my rifle and react. I first tried to ascertain where the shooting was coming from, where I was in relation to the gunfire and how far away it was. I think most untrained people are either going to freeze up, or just whip out their gun and start firing in that circumstance.

Rivera is suggesting that the average person doesn’t have the training or mindset to responsibly and safely become the “good guy with a gun” in the instance of a mass shooting. Armed combat requires training and judgement to make sure that all lives are protected. Military members and law enforcement officials undergo non-stop weapons training.

The goal is making sure no one dies. Average gun nuts just want to play action hero and being a “good guy with a gun” is a child’s fantasy.
