Senator Bernie Sanders may be the most liberal person running for president in 2016, but one should not worry that his liberal politics will lead to more gridlock in government. Rather, Senator Sanders believes that his 20 years in the Senate have given more than a few examples of the way he has worked on issues across the aisle to make important legislation happen with both Democrats and Republicans.
“I am probably the most progressive member in the United States Senate, but I have–over the years not only in the Senate, but in the House–worked with Republicans when there was common ground.”
Previously being nicknamed the “Amendment King” in a 2005 Rolling Stones article, Sanders boasts of his successful years in the senate.
“In a number of years, I got more amendments passed in the House, working with Republicans than anyone else.”
Sanders has notably teamed up with Republicans such as John McCain and Jeff Miller to pass legislation which revolutionized veteran’s healthcare.
Of course, as Sanders has said again and again, his presidency means little if Congress remains unchanged. If Democratic voters are able to get their representatives elected, Sanders could be lining up to accomplish everything he has promised and more.
