During these end times in what is surely the final days of civility and rationality before the Trump-ation of America is complete, it is comforting to see a bit of justice being served to help keep the fever-dreams of our impending dystopian future at bay.
One such ray of justice appeared in North Carolina as the police department which handled Trump’s rally from last week has placed five of its officers on probation for failure to act.
The North Carolina rally was the one in which a protester, being escorted from the rally by police, was sucker punched by a Trump fan before police tackled and arrested the protester. If multiple videos of the incident were not shot and subsequently uploaded to the internet, it is doubtful that the man who committed the battery would have seen any consequences for his actions at all. As it is, NC police arrested the man and charged him with assault.
NC police also briefly flirted with the idea of charging Trump for inciting a riot, but quickly let that idea go as presidential candidates are clearly above the law.
Now, the same department has taken luke-warm action against the officers who mishandled the situation, demoting three and placing all five on three to five days unpaid suspension. The five officers are also on probation for a year for their role in the violent clash.
Sheriff Earl “Moose” Butler had this to say about his deputies:
“The actions of the deputies and their failures to act in situations such as that which occurred during the Trump rally at the Crown Coliseum have never been and will not ever be tolerated under the policies of this office.”
We can only hope that in the face of such uncontrolled rage that Trump is fanning, the nation’s police forces will step up and defend Americans from the violent movement. After all, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?
