Shaun King made a startling revelation in an article on Wednesday for the New York Daily News when he reminded America that Democrats, too, are part of the Trump problem.
While we all aren’t too surprised to hear that 75 percent of Trump supporters also support his proposed ban on Muslims entering the country, we may be less comfortable with the fact that more than a third of Democrats also support this radical policy.
That’s right.
The only real difference is that Democrats are less likely to approve of the idea when it is connected to Trump, but when the idea proposed all by itself? 1 out of 3 Democrats think it’s a pretty good idea.
King points out in his article that this bigotry and hatred of the “other” is not at all unique to the Republican party, and that evidence of this sinister strain can be seen all over the Democratic party. For example, look at the dozen of North Carolina democratic house members who voted in favor of the extreme anti-LGBT law that was rushed through the state government last Friday. These people stand up and proclaim their Democrat label while espousing intolerant, restrictive, and hateful beliefs.
These people are also, most likely, the sort of Democrats who are happy with the status quo. They don’t want radical change in the party and in the nation because they are too busy being terrified of brown people and transgender individuals.
If one-third of Democrats say that they support a hateful Trump-proposed policy, it makes it clearer than ever that our two-party system is defunct. How can people who the Republican right refer to as Social Justice Warriors and Communists also exist under the same umbrella of people who favor religious discrimination and dangerous policy-making?
It turns out that true progressivism is a rare and admirable trait. much rarer, in fact, than many of us realized. No, this isn’t a Republican vs. Democrat issue for once. It is a severe breakdown in the entire system, and something must be done.
