Donald Trump’s most recent comments about the pro-life movement did a lot more than infuriate pro-choice Americans; it also threw pro-life Republicans into an absolute tizzy as Trump called for women to face punishments for receiving abortions, a tactic pro-lifers have avoided for decades.
Though they may personally feel that abortion-seeking women are committing a crime, they have focused the brunt of their legal tactics on taking down abortion providers rather than punishing the women obtaining the abortions themselves.
During an interview on Hardball with Chris Matthews Wednesday, Trump struggled to reconcile his new-found pro-life persona with his ham-fisted personality.
When Matthews pushed him to say yes or no to punishments for abortions, Trump said, “I think there has to be some form of punishment.”
“For the woman?” Matthews questioned.
“Yes, there has to be some form.”
Trump then went on to suggest that America will need to go back to the time when women were forced to have back-alley abortions. It wasn’t a veiled reference, however. Trump outright mentioned back-alley abortions as a necessary evil in his commitment to banning abortion.
If there was ever any question about whether or not Trump truly loves and respects women the way he claims, this is absolutely irrefutable proof that he does not. Making abortion illegal doesn’t stop abortions or “save the babies.” Instead, it costs thousands of women their lives as they die a painful death from a botched abortion. For the rest of the women who would have obtained a safe abortion but would be banned from doing so, they sink further into poverty and are forced to raise children they neither wanted, nor could afford.
Watch.
