During a campaign event this week, Senator Bernie Sanders addressed the issue of legalizing marijuana. The Senator has come out in the past in favor of decriminalizing marijuana and rails against the legal justice system that incarcerates black youths disproportionately for drug possession.
“Right now,” said Sanders, “marijuana is listed as a schedule 1 drug under the Federal Controlled Substance Act. That is the highest level, right alongside heroin.”
And what does the Senator think about that classification?
“I think that’s dumb.”
Bernie has a page devoted to drug policy on his website wherein he declares the war on drugs to be a total failure, emphasizes drug treatment programs rather than incarceration, and would, if elected, focus on allowing states to legalize the drug as they see fit.
