As the old mantra proclaims: “Do as I say, not as I do.”
That’s apparently a motto of which Donald Trump is particularly fond as the candidate’s campaign has said that any and all vice presidential candidates will be required to release their tax returns as a condition of joining the Trump ticket.
Of course, Trump has said repeatedly that he does not want to release his tax returns as he is currently under audit, though the IRS has said that there is no legal precedent barring Trump from releasing while in the process of an audit. It is traditional procedure that presidential nominees release their tax information, and it is an issue which caused trouble for previous Republican nominee Mitt Romney.
Since Trump has been made the Republican nominee, there has been a great deal of speculation about who the candidate will select as his running-mate.
Trump chose to forego Ted Cruz’s method of choosing a VP before even getting the nomination, and he has remained silent about who he is leaning toward. Trump has involved buddies Ben Carson and Chris Christie in the decision-making, and an initial list of five to seven secretive names has been procured.
One thing is for sure: whoever ends up winning the honor (guffaw) of running alongside Donald Trump will have to make sure they have their financial ducks in a row, because there’s only room for one defiant refusal to release tax returns, and that’s saved for The Donald.
