An advertisement for detergent in China is coming under fire recently for its racist depiction of dark skin as dirty and undesirable. Usually when we think of racism, we imagine it being perpetrated by white western societies, but this ad shows that places like China still have a long way to go as well.

In this startlingly racist detergent advertisement from China, an attractive dark-skinned black man enters a laundry room covered in paint. An attractive Chinese girl goes to kiss him before shoving a detergent tablet into his mouth and pushing him inside the machine.

It’s at this point that most viewers will think “surely not” at what is about to happen, but indeed what emerges from the washer is a clean light-skinned Chinese man.

What?!

This racism must be seen to be believed. Watch.
