Listening to the GOP, it’s easy to imagine that the scores of people who have risked life and limb to make a better life here in America through illegal means did so out of selfishness, laziness, or criminality.
The reality is much harder to face, so many try not to at all.
Since 2001, at least 2,600 people who have tried to cross the border from Mexico into Arizona died during their journey. The Intercept’s Josh Begley shows us exactly where most of those victims succumbed to exhaustion, starvation, and the elements, never having made it to the better life they imagined.
Click here to see each individual location where a person seeking freedom died in the pursuit, either on or near American soil. These are adults, children, and the elderly. Men and women. All simply seeking a better life. All so desperate to achieve it that they were willing to lose their lives if necessary.
Don’t let the Republicans reduce these lives down to a handful of “criminals and rapists” and don’t let them make you believe that building a wall is about drug trafficking.
They want you to forget that these 2,600 lives existed.
They want you to demonize and dehumanize those who arrive here successfully, work their asses off, and try to live happy lives.
Don’t let them make you forget.
