As the door to the presidency slams shut for progressive champion Bernie Sanders, the progressive surrogates who supported him wholeheartedly are left to focus on other issues to further the agenda of the revolution that has not come anywhere near ending just because the primary is over.
Hawaii representative Tulsi Gabbard is one of those many surrogates and supporters who is launching a petition to put an end to the Democratic party’s use of Superdelegates.
In 2016, Superdelegates had a massive and unfair sway on the popular vote, most having proclaimed their support long before the voting even occurred. This led to incorrect reporting from most media outlets for the entirety of the Democratic primary, leading people to believe that Clinton was much further ahead than she really was.
We can never know how the race might have turned out if the votes had been represented fairly, but we can make sure that they cannot influence another election again.
Many people in individual states have petitioned to have Superdelegates removed from their state’s primary, but Gabbard’s petition seeks to end the practice nationwide.
Gabbard has been sharing the petition on her social media profiles, saying that both Clinton and Sanders supporters should be in favor of ending the influence of lobbyists and party officials in the selection of a nominee.
