Riding on the heels of the disastrous Republican National Convention, Donald Trump has overtaken Hillary Clinton in national polls, leading the race.
Many had questioned if Trump would received a boost from the convention at all, considering how much of a mess it was with multiple scandals. Apparently all of that Clinton bashing and Trump end-times-ranting paid off, and Trump has been rewarded with a brief lead over Clinton.
In a poll released by CBS on Monday, Trump led Clinton 43-42.
As in other similar polls, if the question includes Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, Trump still leads by one point at 40, Clinton at 39, and Johnson at 12. Johnson remains just 3 points shy of being admitted to the national debate stage.
Fortunately, this lead should quickly evaporate as the Democratic convention commences, giving the American people an extended glimpse at the 2016 version of the Democratic party.
We can expect to see these polls go back and forth for the next several months, but it is deeply troubling that things were ever able to get this close at all.
