Noted political speaker Noam Chomsky was one of the strongest proponents for Bernie Sanders’ “Revolution,” helping to spread his ideas and add a legitimate air to what was sometimes an evidence-less claim.
Which is why when Chomsky attempts to make a rational, well thought-out argument for voting the lesser of two evils, it is worth at least giving it a once-over.
Chomsky published the article, “An Eight Point Brief for LEV (Lesser Evil Voting),” which attempts to do just that – make the argument for why a voter should feel good about casting a vote for someone they consider to be “evil” when the alternative is so much worse.
It’s a hard sell, no doubt, to political purists who have been praised for months for their steadfast hatred of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and yet Chomsky’s argument is hard one to ignore.
“[T]hose reflexively denouncing advocates of LEV on a supposed “moral” basis should consider that their footing on the high ground may not be as secure as they often take for granted to be the case.
A Trump presidency, should it materialize, will undermine the burgeoning movement centered around the Sanders campaign, particularly if it is perceived as having minimized the dangers posed by the far right.
However, the left should also recognize that, should Trump win based on its failure to support Clinton, it will repeatedly face the accusation (based in fact), that it lacks concern for those sure to be most victimized by a Trump administration.”
