During Monday’s “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver did what he often does – look at a mostly-ignored industry and tore it apart, piece by piece.

This week, that focus was charter schools. Oliver points out at the beginning of his segment that his argument is a controversial one, saying that charter school proponents are a dedicated bunch who will not hesitate to clap back at a moment’s notice. Oliver also shared clips of several presidents and presidential candidates voicing their support for charter schools.

So what’s wrong with these schools? According to Oliver, a whole lot.

“The problem with letting the free market decide when it comes to kids is that kids change faster than the market. And by the time it’s obvious that a school is failing, futures may have been ruined.”
