Maine Governor Paul LePage has been in headlines again and again for his discriminatory and offensive comments concerning a litany of topics, most often associated with drug use.
LePage has said that 90 percent of drug dealers are black or Hispanic, as well as accusing black men of crossing the border into Maine to impregnate white women. LePage was also caught sending an expletive-laden voicemail to a fellow elected Democrat. Even when his constituents sent in thousands of letters demanding his resignation, he refused.
Since August, LePage has even refused to speak to the media, claiming that he was “tired of being caught in the ‘gotcha’ moments.”
So when the governor chose to speak out this week against the state’s proposed marijuana legalization referendum, he did so through a video posted on Facebook.
In it, LePage offered a wildly false view of legalized marijuana in which people died from overdosing on the drug (virtually impossible) and children and pets were accidentally killed off by stray marijuana-laced snacks.
In LePage’s “deadly” dystopian legal weed future, weed culture would apparently invade everywhere – even schools, daycare centers, and churches – y’know, like how people drink beer at daycare and smoke cigarettes during the sermon.
“They will smoke weed and sell pot at state fairs. Businesses could not fire employees for using marijuana.”
It seems to me that the best place to smoke weed would be at a state fair, but that’s neither here nor there.
Despite LePage’s beliefs, the rules on allowing employers to control what substances their employees are on hasn’t changed in any state, and if an employer so chooses, they could drug test as often as they wanted – and fire employees for pot use, even in legal states.
As is always the case, this video from LePage is just more of his insane babbling. Poor Maine.
