Just as the Koch Brothers fear, Donald Trump’s presidency is having an unprecedented effect on progressives around the country, inspiring thousands to take action and run for office.
In just one weekend – the weekend Trump instituted his Muslim ban – over 1,000 progressives signed up to run for office with political organization Run For Something.
Because of an influx of activism and unity in opposition to Trump, left-wing organizations have been working overtime these last two weeks to recruit and inspire regular citizens to join the fight from the inside and run for political office.
Run For Something, which launched on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration, is just one of several organizations seeking this goal, and it appears to be working. Over the weekend, the organization’s recruits doubled from 1,200 to 2,200.
Huffington Post notes the other organizations seeing astounding interest in political office:
“A number of progressive grass-roots groups have cropped up since Trump’s win in November, and they, too, have seen huge interest. Swing Left, which links volunteers with progressive House candidates in nearby swing districts, has drawn more than 220,000 people since it launched two weeks ago. Daily Action, which launched in mid-December and makes progressive activism as easy as a daily text, already sends 75,000 texts per day and has more than 40,000 Facebook members.”
This raw activism on the part of millions who had never before taking part in a protest must be captured and funneled into productive, forward-moving action.
