Authorities report that two firefighters in Kansas City have been killed while saving two people from a burning building this morning. Two other firefighters were also injured in the blaze.
The deceased heroes’ names are Larry J. Leggio and John V. Mesh.
An emotional Fire Chief Paul Berardi delivered the news.
“They did not die in vain,” said Berardi. “They saved two civilians, carried them out of the second floor on ladders, before the wall collapsed.”
“Our hearts absolutely go out to the families, both to their peers who are grieving but also to their family members who are at the hospital with them now,” Berardi said.
“Tonight’s tragic loss is a reminder that Kansas City firefighters put their lives on the line for all of us every day,” said Mayor Sly James. “Our condolences go out to the loved ones of those who made the ultimate sacrifice today, and we pray for recovery of the injured.”
