This week, after not hearing from Ben & Jerry for quite some time, the political duo have reappeared to speak on a new issue: Black Lives Matter.
We all got to know the liberal activists behind America’s favorite ice cream company during the Democratic primary when one half of the team – Ben Cohen – released a limited edition of the famous ice cream aptly called “Bernie’s Yearning.”
The adorable pint of political cream featured mint ice cream topped with a solid milk chocolate disk (the 1%) which the consumer would crack with a spoon upon opening and “distribute” to the 99% of the container. Cute, right?
Ben & Jerry also hit the road, stumping all over their northeastern portion of the country to support Bernie. But when Bernie dropped out of the race, so did Cohen and his ice-cream mogul companion.
Now, several months later, the men are back to speak out against police brutality and argue that black lives do matter – and that saying that at all is what matters.
The duo released a statement on their company website on Thursday where they spoke about institutionalized racism and social justice.
“Black lives matter.
They matter because they are children, brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers.
They matter because the injustices they face steal from all of us — white people and people of color alike. They steal our very humanity.
Systemic and institutionalized racism are the defining civil rights and social justice issues of our time. We’ve come to understand that to be silent about the violence and threats to the lives and well-being of Black people is to be complicit in that violence and those threats.”
Two kind, gentle men who supported Bernie and are now continuing the fight for progressive issues, and they also love ice cream? You can’t get any better than that!
