Environmental justice is the lesser known part of the battle for Civil Rights, but for many low income Americans and communities of color, environmental crises are very much a part of their daily lives. The government agency charged with protecting communities from toxic pollutants is the Environmental Protection Agency. However, a report this month by the U.S. Civil Rights Commission found that the EPA has continually failed these communities, especially when it comes to the dumping of harmful coal ash near poor communities.
