After raping and taking pictures of patients at a low-income health clinic, one San Diego doctor, Dr. Jeffrey Joel Abrams, will not be facing any jail time for his actions.
In June, Dr. Abrams pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, three counts of sexual battery, and eight counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person. He lost his license to practice medicine and was sentenced to almost 26 years in prison. That is, until Judge Laura Halgren suspended his sentence and changed it to one year of house arrest.
According to the charges against Abrams, over the course of four years, between June 2010 and June 2014, Abrams took photos and illegally touched 12 victims, one of which was only 8-years-old. Abrams told the patients that the photos were for educational purposes. However, authorities found none of the photos in the patients’ medical records.
Prosecutors said that they agreed to the sentencing change as Abrams suffers from kidney cancer, along with other health issues, and it would keep victims from having to testify in court.
Abrams will be required to register as a sex offender and must carry out five years of probation after his house arrest.
