The opening Sunday of the NFL season saw the protest movement started by San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick grow even bigger. Dozens of players around the league participated – some by refusing to stand during the national anthem – others b n e ing while it was being played – and still others by raising their fists in solidarity. The NFL is a pretty reactionary place – is the fact that this movement only appears to be growing a sign that our society is transforming in a pretty important way? Is it helping us move towards a new form of patriotism?
