Janine Gaspari, Transparent GMU/UnKoch My Campus & Mark Hammond, UnKoch My Campus, joins Thom. When George Mason University announced earlier this year that it was going to rename in its law school the Antonin Scalia School Of Law in honor of the late Supreme Court justice – the reaction from the internet was swift and brutal. That’s because when abbreviated – the school’s new name was A – S – S – O – L – an unintentional joke anyone who’s graduated from the 3rd grade can understand. In response to this PR disaster – George Mason announced that it would instead change the name of its law school to the Antonin Scalia Law School – which has the much more PG acronym of “ASLS.” That name change was made official last Thursday at a ceremony attended by 6 Supreme Court justices. But the controversy isn’t over just yet. The very fact that George Mason decided to name its law school after Antonin Scalia at all still angers many GMU students – and they held a rally outside the naming ceremony to protest the decision. They say it’s just more proof of the expanding influence big money donors like the Koch brothers have over the education system.
